History
The General Charitable Society of Newburyport was founded in 1850 by a group of women living in the south end of the city. Concerned by the poverty of their neighbors, they took it upon themselves to form the Society to help those in need in their community. The mission was “to lend a helping hand to those who are struggling through poverty and discouragements…”
Members of the group collected dues and other donations. As cautious stewards of these funds, they quietly began supporting Newburyport families and the elderly by providing food, clothing and housing assistance.
Our Purpose Today
